Meet the most influential people in the fight against climate change

Actors, influencers, politicians, businessmen and activists have in common the concern for our planet’s future. Here are some personalities that have raised their voices in the face of the environmental crisis and that, through their actions, promote a more sustainable lifestyle.

Greta Thunberg

Activist

She began as a single girl protesting in front of the Swedish parliament in the absence of environmental policies and today, she has become the most fervent spokeswoman for the climate crisis. This 16-year-old with Asperger syndrome has inspired student protests in more than 100 countries, was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and, in addition to being designated as one of the 25 most influential teenagers in the world, Time magazine named her “Person of the year 2019”.

Leonardo DiCaprio

Actor

When DiCaprio won the Oscar in 2016, he took advantage of his time at the microphone to alert the audience about climate change. Although we are used to seeing him in front of the cameras, in recent years he has remained behind the scenes to produce documentaries that raise awareness in society. Hour 11, Cowspiracy, Virunga and Before It’s Too Late, are some examples. His most recent production, Ice on Fire, explores different technological projects to reduce the carbon footprint in the atmosphere.

Boyan Slat

Entrepreneur, Activist

When he was only 18, Boyan came up with a concept that uses natural oceanic forces to trap water plastic, which could reduce the cleaning time of the sea from millennia to only a few years. In February 2013, the young Dutchman abandoned his studies in Aerospace Engineering to found The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organization that develops technologies to remove plastic from the world’s oceans. Today, with 25 years, he is already in his second prototype and has begun to collect garbage in the Pacific.

Arturo Islas Allende

Influencer, Activist

This Mexican actor, producer and speaker has gone viral on social media thanks to his commitment as an activist. His content seeks to educate about wildlife, endangered species and the importance of caring for different ecosystems, as shown in his television program Indomable x Naturaleza (Indomitable by Nature, in Spanish). This year he won the Redford Center Award, the oldest environmental activism award.

Luisa Neubauer

Activist

Following in the footsteps of Thunberg is this 23-year-old German activist, who has popularized student strikes in her country to demand that the Paris Agreement be respected. Luisa has managed to organize up to 533 rallies, which she constantly broadcasts through her social networks. In addition, she is the author of the book At the end of the climate crisis.

Al Gore

Politician

You may remember him as the vice president of the United States during Bill Clinton’s term or as the opponent of George W. Bush in the 2000 presidential election. However, outside politics, Al Gore has been working as an environmental activist for decades. He is the author of several titles such as Earth in the Balance and An Inconvenient Truth; he has also founded non-profit organizations such as the Climate Protection Alliance and, in 2007, he received the Nobel Peace Prize.

Sylvia Earl

Marine biologist

This legendary marine biologist has dedicated her life to exploring and caring for the oceans. In the 1990s, she established her company Deep Ocean Exploration and Research and collaborated with National Geographic on numerous documentaries on aquatic life. In addition, she is an expert in studying the environmental damage caused by oil spills. She was called as a consultant during the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. After winning the TED Prize in 2009, she launched her Mission Blue initiative, which continues active to date and seeks to arouse the interest of local communities in the preservation of its seas.
